State Opens Study of Shore Road Intersection

This intersection at Route 25A, also known as Main Street, is of growing concern to residents.

East Setauket residents spoke, and the state's Department of Transportation has listened.

Following complaints that the intersection of Shore Road and Route 25A – also known as Main Street in that part of town – is dangerous in its current form, the state is looking into whether changes are needed.

Eileen Peters, the NYSDOT's public information officer, told Patch that the department "has initiated a study to determine if additional traffic controls are needed in the vicinity of NY Route 25A and Shore Road to address safety concerns."

The study comes on the heels of complaints sent to Patch by three different residents who live nearby. Those residents – who did not want their names published – spoke of issues such as a large number of vehicles parking on Shore Road; vehicles violating "No Parking" areas and parking in the crosswalk; and impatient drivers violating road rules with pedestrian and bicycle traffic present.

However, Peters said, the violation of road rules "are law enforcement issues which should be addressed by the Suffolk County Police" instead of the state.

In a statement to Patch, Sixth Precinct Sgt. John Vahey said the police department would compile data from that intersection to study it as well as alert its COPE unit and local sector car operators to the problematic intersection "to keep an eye on it."
