Ward Melville High School Principal William Bernhard touted the district’s 11 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists for their outstanding achievement on the Preliminary SAT exam. These students are among the approximately 16,000 academically talented high school seniors from across the nation to be named semifinalists. They will each have the opportunity to advance in the competition and be named finalists, which are expected to be announced in February.

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School Principal Corinne Keane and science chairperson Pete Schuchman congratulated science teacher Nicolette DeMartino for earning the Science Teachers Association of New York State Fellows New Teacher Award. The final recognition of the evening acknowledged nurse Sharon Arvidsson at Setauket Elementary School. Arvidsson recently became a National Certified School Nurse. To earn this title, a registered nurse must demonstrate a high level of education, clinical practice experience and knowledge. Nurse Sharon, as she is known by students, completed coursework and a rigorous exam to be certified in this special area.
