Ward Melville High School Math Team Excels at Harvard–MIT Mathematics Tournament

Students performed exceptionally well in this highly competitive competition.

The Ward Melville High School Math Team, led by Mr. Aaron Tam, achieved outstanding results at the recent Harvard–MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT). HMMT is one of the most prestigious and challenging high school math competitions in the world, drawing close to 900 top math students (around 120 teams) from across the United States and around the globe.

This year, the team consisted of Michael Retakh (12th), Eric Zhong (12th), Yuming Su (12th), Harry Gao (11th), Jason Yin (11th), and Alan Mao (10th).

  • Overall Individual 4th Place: Harry Gao
  • Overall Individual 36th place: Eric Zhong
  • General Round 15th Place: Harry Gao
  • General Round 42nd Place: Eric Zhong
  • Theme Round 2nd Place: Harry Gao
  • Team Round: 5th Place
  • Guts Round: 1st Place
  • Sweepstakes (Overall): 5th Place

“Their success reflects remarkable problem-solving skills, collaboration, and dedication. I am extremely proud of Mr. Tam and all the hard work and representation of our school at this level by our students,” said Rocco Vetro, Mathematics Chairperson at Ward Melville High School.
