Ward Melville Math Team Excels at Prestigious Princeton University Math Competition

The Ward Melville Math Team, coached by Mr. Aaron Tam, traveled to Princeton University for the annual Princeton University Math Competition (PUMaC). This competition attracts the top math students from around the world, and admission for PUMaC is merit-based, requiring each team to demonstrate the strength of its math program and competition record. This year PUMaC attracted over 650 students with over 80 national and international teams competing. PUMaC is split into two divisions, each featuring individual subject rounds followed by a team round, and top-scoring individuals advance to a proof-based final round.

This year’s team consisted of Eric Zhong (12th), Harry Gao (11th), Vicky Ye (11th), Jane Tang (11th), Eric Zou (12th), Jason Yin (11th), Gunes Sunar (11th), and Arnav Aggarwal (10th).

  • Combinatorics: 6th place - Harry Gao, 5th place - Eric Zhong
  • Individual: 7th place - Harry Gao
  • Power Round: 4th Place
  • Team Round: 3rd Place
  • Overall: 7th Place

The student’s participation and impressive results at PUMaC were made possible by the Math Team officers, whose hard work and preparation ensured the team was ready to compete. The team is also deeply grateful for the support of the school and the STEM Foundation, which allows opportunities like this where they can demonstrate their mathematical talent on an international stage.
