Ward Melville Student Selected to Represent United States in International Competition
Eric Liu is one of only four students selected

Eric King Liu, a rising junior at Ward Melville High School, has qualified to represent the United States at the International Biology Olympiad (USABO). He will compete in the Philippines July 20-27.
After two rounds of challenging exams, 20 finalists were invited to a residential training program where they learned advanced biological concepts and exacting lab skills at the USABO National Finals. Ultimately, four students earn the right to represent the United States as the USA Biolympiad Team at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO), a worldwide competition involving student teams from over 70 countries. Eric is one of the four students selected.
“This is a tremendous honor for Eric to be chosen as one of only four students representing the United States at the International Biology Olympiad,” said Ward Melville High School Principal John Holownia. “We are incredibly proud of him. This achievement is a testament to Eric’s intelligence, and hard work, and to the outstanding support he has received from his parents and teachers. We wish him the best of luck as he competes later this month.”

Discovering the wonders of biology through Science Olympiad’s Anatomy and Physiology event, Eric started USABO at the end of his freshman year. Eric also is involved in Alzheimer’s research at Mount Sinai and he is a member of his school’s Science Olympiad and Science Bowl team.
“As a USA Biology Olympiad National Finalist, I had the opportunity to attend the USABO training camp at Harvard University. There, I met and worked with others who share my passion,” said Eric. “At Harvard, we worked together with amazing mentors and resources, allowing us to learn and get better at every aspect of the competition. I’m truly grateful to CEE and Harvard for giving us this opportunity, and especially to Kathy, our USABO director, whose guidance and support were invaluable throughout the entire experience. On top of all the learning, I made close friends from all over the country, and it was also extremely fun together.”
