WATCH: SBU Medical School's Annual White Coat Ceremony

Students also take Hippocratic Oath as their medical education begins.

Stony Brook University's incoming medical school class of 2015 donned their white coats for the first time and took the Hippocratic oath during the university's annual white coat ceremony on Sunday.

For the 124 first-year medical students, the ceremony represents a transition and a sign of the responsibilities they will have as future doctors.

"It's a big stepping stone as far as my life goes," said Jeremy Miyauchi, 24, of Ossining.

Himanshu Sharma, 22, of Montgomery, N.J., described the ceremony as amazing but intimidating.

"You grow up seeing doctors in their white coats," he said. "This is the first physical sign that you're going to be there someday, too."
