Lena Horne's Former UES Home Hits The Market For $2.2 Million
The legendary actor and singer's former Upper East Side co-op sits on East 74th Street near Central Park.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Legendary singer and actress Lena Horne spent more than three decades living in an Upper East Side co-op building known as The Volney — and her apartment just hit the market with an astronomical price tag, as first reported by The New York Times.
Horne's apartment in 23 E. 74th St. carries a $2.195 million asking price, along with a monthly maintenance bill of $5,789, a listing that went up Friday states.
"Step into old New York’s rarified Celebrity History in this one-of-a-kind gem," reads a listing for the apartment on City Realty's website. "On this beautifully tree-lined street in the prime Park Block location of East 74th St. between Madison and 5th Avenues, legendary performer and activist Lena Horne called this apartment home."

Horne, who died in 2010, was one of the most popular performers of her time, best known for her roles in "Cabin in the Sky" and "The Wiz."
She moved into the fifth floor of The Volney in the early 1980s, which is now a 2,100 square-foot apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and hardwood floors.

The Volney was built in 1929 as a hotel and converted into a co-op in 1982.
On the first day of November, Horne will become the first Black woman to have a Broadway theater named after her, as the Brooks Atkinson Theater will become the Lena Horne Theater.
