Manhole Explodes On The Upper East Side

A small manhole fire caused smoke and a loud explosion noise on the Upper East Side.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An Upper East Side manhole cover exploded on Monday morning, causing a large bang and smoke to disperse in the neighborhood, fire officials said.

The manhole was reportedly smoking at about 10:45 a.m. on Monday before a small explosion, an FDNY spokesman said. The manhole is located near 75th Street and Second Avenue. No one was injured in the incident, and firefighters are still on scene, the spokesman said.

Manhole fires and explosions are more common during the winter months because of the salt put down on the roads.
