Video: Upper East Side Moped Robbers Fought Off By Women

Dramatic video shows two men on a moped trying to snatch a woman's necklace near the Guggenheim Museum, only to be thwarted by her friend.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Two men on a moped tried to snatch a woman's necklace in broad daylight near the Guggenheim Museum on Saturday, only to be fended off by the woman and her friend, according to police.

Police released video hours after the brazen robbery attempt, which happened on East 89th Street near Fifth Avenue just after noon on Saturday, police said.

The two women, both 28, were walking eastbound when the two men rode their moped toward them on the sidewalk, police said.

Video shows the moped driver stepping off his vehicle, reaching toward one of the women, and trying to grab her necklace, police said.

The woman resists and falls to the ground as her friend rushes to her aid and begins pulling her down the sidewalk, away from the assailants, the video shows.

The moped passenger follows the woman down the sidewalk and reaches toward her again, only to give up moments later and hop back on the moped as the two women dash off toward Central Park, the video shows.

Both men on the moped fled south along Fifth Avenue after the robbery attempt, while the woman declined medical attention for minor injuries, police said.

Police described the suspects as men in their 20s, both with thin builds and wearing helmets.
