5 Injured In UES Basement Fire, FDNY Says

One person was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, authorities said.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — New York City Fire Department officials are investigating after a fire broke out in an Upper East Side basement on Saturday afternoon, injuring five people and sending one to the hospital.

According to the FDNY, the fire started in the basement of the apartment building at 169 East 69th St. between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, following a report of an explosion in the area.

Around 60 firefighters and medics responded to the blaze, getting the fire under control by 3:46 p.m., FDNY officials said.

Five people were injured from the fire, including two firefighters and three civilians, one of whom was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, authorities said.

The others sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention on the scene, authorities said.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the FDNY, authorities said.
