Hundreds Of Gallons Of Oil Spill From Crane At UWS Work Site: DOB
The spill took place amid work to construct a 775-unit residential tower on the Upper West Side at 66th Street.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Hundreds of gallons of oil spilled from a crane at a controversial construction site Tuesday night on the Upper West Side, an FDNY spokesperson told Patch.
A total of 700 gallons of diesel fuel spilled amid ongoing work at 36 W. 66th St., which is in between Columbus and Central Park West, FDNY said.
There were luckily no injuries and the FDNY's hazmat team was able to cap the leak and mitigate the spill, the spokesperson said.

The location of the spill is the site of Extell Development's incoming 775-unit towering residential property that will be the tallest building on the Upper West Side.
Extell won a lawsuit in May to allow the real estate developer to build the towering address.

The spill happened after a fuel line for a crane at the site started leaking, causing diesel to fall from the sky and land on the sidewalk, a spokesperson from the Department of Buildings said.
Inspectors from the city agency found no additional hazard to the public after the clean up process, but the DOB did issue a Partial Stop Work Order at the site for the use of a crane, and also dished out a violation to the contractor for failure to safeguard the construction site.
DOB inspectors are conducting an additional visit on Wednesday to observe the tower crane fuel line.
