Cathedral Of St. John The Divine Moves Christmas Services Online

The famous church on West 112th Street and Amsterdam announced Monday it is moving all of its holiday services to the virtual world.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the largest and one of the most well-attended churches on the Upper West Side, announced Monday that it is moving its Christmas and holiday services online amid a surge in coronavirus cases.

The cathedral is located at 1047 Amsterdam, between West 112th and 113th Streets.

"Today, the city, nation, and world are once again facing a coronavirus surge, this time driven by the newly emergent omicron variant," reads an update posted to the cathedral's website. "As the Cathedral has done before, placing the needs and concerns of the wider community first is crucial. Out of an abundance of caution, and following guidance from New York City and federal health experts, this year’s Christmas services will move online."

The Christmas Eve and Day services, as well as caroling events, will be available on the Cathedral of St. John the Divine's website, Facebook page, and Youtube channel.

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine was opened in 1911. It is the sixth-largest church by area in the world.
