Columbia Student Threw An Unlit Molotov Cocktail On Campus, Police Say

The man was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, police said.

MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, NY — A Columbia University student was arrested Monday night on accusations of throwing an unlit Molotov cocktail out of a campus building window, New York City Police Department officials said.

NYPD officials said Javen Jovero, 22, threw a plastic water bottle filled with rubbing alcohol and stuffed with a sock out of a window on Monday morning at 70 Morningside Drive, which is the university's East Campus building.

Jovero was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside for a psychiatric evaluation, and placed under arrest, police said.

Jovero was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, police said.

It is not clear if the incident was connected to recent political turmoil at the school, authorities said.

“An incident took place yesterday morning on East Campus in which an object was dropped from the window of a Columbia property into the bushes below," a Columbia University spokesperson said. "Public Safety and the NYPD responded immediately to the incident and apprehended an individual believed to be involved. This was an isolated incident with no other individuals involved. A full investigation is underway, and the University’s rules and policies will be applied and enforced.”
