Cops Called On Black Man Moving Into UWS Apartment: Report

The man was moving back to New York City after a successful career in Washington that included a job in Barack Obama's White House.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A black man moving into his new Upper West Side apartment got an unwelcome visit from the police, according to reports.

Darren Martin was moving back to his native New York City on Friday after a successful career in Washington D.C. that included a stint in Barack Obama's White House, when his new neighbors called the cops on him, Pix 11 first reported.

Martin streamed his encounter with several police officers on his Instagram page, Pix 11 reported. During the live stream, one of the officers turned the volume of his radio up to play the dispatch call.

The caller reported a "burglary in progress" at the West 106th Street apartment building and told police that "Somebody was trying to break in the door” with a weapon or large tool, Pix 11 reported. Martin told the news station that he was forced to move in at that time due to his busy schedule at his new job with the city.

Martin told Pix 11 that he plans to stay in his new apartment for the duration of his one-year lease and hopes that his neighbor's learned a lesson.

"The broader message to everyone is get to know folks before you make these assumptions," Martin told Pix 11. "When you make that call there’s no turning back and it could have ended very differently."
