Corrections Officer Kills Man On Upper West Side, Police Say

The shooting was New York City's second homicide of 2020.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A New York City Corrections Officer is facing murder charges for a fatal shooting on the Upper West Side, an NYPD spokesman said.

Cardell Gadsden, 30, turned himself in at the 24th Precinct hours after Steven Gadsden, 37, was shot to death on Manhattan Avenue and West 107 Street shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday, police said. An NYPD spokesman could not confirm whether the suspect and victim — who have the same last name — are related.

Officers found Steven Gadsden suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso, and medics rushed the man to Mount Sinai Saint Luke's Hospital, police said. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital, an NYPD spokesman said.

Cardell Gadsden was charged with second-degree murder and criminal use of a firearm, police said. The motive for the shooting, and whether the suspect and victim are related, is still under investigation, an NYPD spokesman said.

The shooting was New York City's second homicide of 2020, and it occurred in one of the safest precincts in the city according to NYPD crime statistics. There were just two murders in the 24th precinct, which spans Manhattan's Upper West Side between West 86th and 110h streets. The number was down from three homicides in 2018. The precinct saw just one shooting all of last year, according to NYPD crime statistics.
