Fire At Upper West Side Senior Housing Leaves 87-Year-Old Woman Dead, 4 Firefighters Injured

The fire happened at an affordable housing community for seniors.

UPPER WEST SIDE, MANHATTAN — An overnight fire at an affordable housing center for seniors on the Upper West Side left an 87-year-old woman dead and four firefighters injured, authorities told Patch.

Authorities responded to the fire on the fifth floor of the 11th-floor Phelps House on Columbus Ave., between 88th and 89th streets, around 1:15 a.m. After the fire was extinguished, the woman was found unresponsive and unconscious, police said.

EMS pronounced her dead on the scene, police said. She was not identified pending family notification.

Four firefighters also suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze and were taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment, an FDNY spokesman told Patch.

The fire was under control by 1:47 a.m., the FDNY said.
