Gluten-Free UWS Bagel Shop Named 6th Best Overall In NYC: Map
One New Yorker ate 200-plus bagels from citywide shops over the course of 13 months and is now ranking the bagels and selling them as NFTs.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — After eating 200-plus bagels, one New Yorker has found the city's best bagelrys — and for what might be a surprise to some — an exclusively gluten-free spot on the Upper West Side is near the top of the list.
"Everything is Everything" is an interactive map and ranking made by Mike Varley, a New Yorker who ate about three everything bagels with scallion cream cheese per week (hence the project's name) for 13 months in search of the city's best bagel shop. Time Out was first to report on the list.
"The data compiled on this site represents the most comprehensive bagel survey of New York City ever attempted," Varley wrote.

Varley scored hundreds of bagel shops based on their ambiance, their bagels' size and texture, and the freshness and dairy-ness of their spread, resulting in multiple scatterplot matrixes and a ranking of best to worst — upon which Modern Bread and Bagel at 472 Columbus Avenue (near West 83rd Street) was ranked as the sixth-best in the city.
The Upper West Side is no stranger to having local shops at the top of best bagel lists, but places like Absolute Bagels and Bagels & Co. usually lead the charge.

Modern Bread and Bagel is entirely gluten-free and kosher, with almost all ingredients made fresh in the restaurant. Chef and owner Orly was inspired to develop a gluten-free baking product that "didn't compromise on taste because of her food-centric husband living with celiac disease."
Modern Bread and Bagel also serves baked goods, sandwiches, and pizza.
Here were the rating scores Modern Bread and Bagel received from Varley:
- Store score: 4.5
- Bagel score: 4.5
- Spread Score: 4.5
- Total Score: 4.5
Varley calls it the "best gluten-free bagel in the city," with "impeccable cream cheese, tightly whipped and light."
Its menu includes bagel + cream cheese with tomato, arugula and pickled onion, smoked salmon, pastrami crusted salmon, homemade vegan lox, smashed avo toast with lemon and cracked pepper, focaccia sandwiches, parmesan-crusted grilled cheese with fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil pesto, and latka tots with parmesan and chives.
Further down the list, Absolute Bagels, H&H Bagels, Broad Nosh Bagels, Bagels & Co. and Lenny's Bagel all featured from the Upper West Side.
Hot Bagels in Middle Village, Queens, was named as the best bagel shop in the city with a 4.75 score.
Bagel lovers who can't make the journey to the Upper West Side can find solace in an NFT bagel, since every review is being sold as one of the internet tokens.
