Here Are The 9 UWS Finalist Projects For $1M In Funding: Budget

After an initial process, nine finalist projects have been chosen to possibly get funded on the Upper West Side. Vote on your favorite.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Exercise equipment in Riverside Park, new trees along Broadway, bus countdown timers at local stops, and new neighborhood security cameras are among the finalists of the Participatory Budget process for the next fiscal year organized by Upper West Side City Council Member Gale Brewer.

In total, Upper West Siders submitted 71 neighborhood projects to receive funding, which have now been whittled down to nine finalists.

The community will be able to vote on the finalists from April 2nd to 10th, with a total of $1 million in funding going to the most popular ideas.

Without further ado, here are the nine finalists for the UWS participatory budgeting process.

Education and Youth

P.S. 9 - Sarah Anderson School Technology Grant

Purchase 12 Promethean Boards and 30 laptops with one laptop cart to ensure each classroom has a smartboard and laptops that are connected to the smart boards.

"This project will ensure that the school has technology deployed to the classrooms to support an enriched and interactive learning experience."

M.S. 243 - Center School Technology Grant

P.S. 199 - Jessie Isadore Straus School Infrastructure Improvements

"Upgrade and repair two existing student restrooms, replace fixtures, stalls, floor/wall tiling, ADA accessibility, etc."

Parks and Environment

Adult Fitness Equipment for Riverside Park

"Create an area with exercise equipment for adult use that includes a section for group classes and a cooling mist fixture."

It does not specify where in Riverside Park it would be.

Greening Broadway: Trees and Tree Guards for Broadway Above 72nd Street

"Install approximately 35 trees and tree guards on the sidewalks along Broadway. This would make the avenue a more attractive destination, is environmentally sound, and offers additional shade."

It would be on Broadway north of 72nd Street.

Streets and Transportation

Bus Countdown Times on Broadway

"Install approximately 4 bus arrival time countdown timers on northbound & southbound multiple-route bus stops on Broadway, where they intersect with crosstown routes."

The timers would be put on major intersections on Broadway, to be determined by the Department of Transportation.

Security Cameras on Broadway, Amsterdam, Columbus, and Riverside

"Install approximately eight security cameras on Broadway, Amsterdam, Columbus and Riverside Drive to deter crime and ensure public safety."

Locations would be determined in consultation with the NYPD.

Housing

"Security cameras in NYCHA Westside Urban Renewal Brownstones to deter crime and ensure public safety."

The Westside Urban Renewal Brownstones are at West 90th Street.

Security cameras for De Hostos Houses

"Security cameras for the ground floor of De Hostos Houses to deter crime and ensure public safety."

De Hostos Houses/NYCHA is at 201 West 93rd Street.


The voting sites for the different proposals will be in person, but the exact locations have not been determined yet.
