Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity – the Upper West Side’s enduring early music program – present an ambitious, multi-evening portrayal of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion and Easter Oratorio for Holy Week 2023. It’s the culmination of Bach Vespers’ 55th Season. Artistic Director Anthony Blake Clark says the program offers the community an exceptional opportunity to immerse themselves in the full arch of the Passion and Resurrection narrative.

“These are some of Bach’s greatest works, portraying sacrifice, redemption, resurrection and renewal,” says Clark. “As these stories unfold during the course of Holy Week, our visitors will experience all of these emotions through words and music.”

Bach Vespers presents the St. John Passion Part I on Palm Sunday April 2 at 5PM, and Part II on Good Friday, April 7 at 7PM. Clark says the drama of the final hours of Christ’s life – presented through the voices of multiple characters of the Passion – is palpable.

“The St. John Passion is raw and fast-paced,” says Clark. “It’s a brooding, visceral experience that ends in mourning and silence.”

By contrast, Bach’s Easter Oratorio – presented on Sunday April 9 at 5PM – radiates pure joy in tone and instrumentation.

“There are three trumpets and timpani,” says Clark, “with the sound of the trumpets signifying Christ’s triumphant victory over death.”

As Bach Vespers concludes its 55th Season, Clark marks the completion of his first year as Artistic Director. The Maryland resident loves being an “honorary New Yorker” and is already looking ahead to Season 56. He notes that 2024 is the 300th anniversary of Bach’s arrival in Leipzig and the year in which Bach produced his first cantata cycle.

“We’re crafting the upcoming season and have some exciting music planned to commemorate this milestone,” Clark promises.

Doors open 30 minutes before service time. Each performance will also be streamed live.
