Man Dies After Fire In UWS Public Housing Building: FDNY

A blaze ignited around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday at 80 Amsterdam Ave. on the UWS, leaving one man dead, FDNY told Patch.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A man is dead after a fatal fire broke out early Tuesday morning in an Upper West Side public housing building, FDNY told Patch.

The blaze ignited shortly before 3 a.m. at 80 Amsterdam Ave., which is part of the Amsterdam Houses complex that stretches from West 61 to 64th streets.

Sixty firefighters responded to the fire on the fifth floor of the 13-story building, FDNY said.

Firefighters had it under control by 4:10 a.m., but one resident was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition and one firefighter was taken to Roosevelt Hospital with a minor injury.

The resident was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to multiple publications, including ABC7 and amNY.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
