Man Smashes Bottle Over Straphanger's Head In Columbus Circle: Police

A man asked a commuter for a buck, then hit him with a beer bottle on the head on Wednesday night, officials said.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A man smashed another man in the head with a beer bottle inside the Columbus Circle subway station Wednesday night after asking the victim if he could spare a buck, police said.

At around 10 p.m., a 44-year-old man was standing on the downtown A/C train platform inside the 59th Street–Columbus Circle station when another man walked up to him and asked him for $1, officials told Patch.

The man then grabbed a plastic bag the 44-year-old commuter was holding and pulled it, police said.

He then smashed the victim in the head with a beer bottle, according to officials.

Medics rushed the victim to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, police said.

An NYPD spokesperson said the suspect, who was wearing a denim jacket and a purple hat, fled to the street.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, polce said.
