UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A man was stabbed onboard a subway train inside the Columbus Circle station early Wednesday morning by a man who went on to stab another person in the Bronx shortly after, police said.

Officials announced Thursday morning that the man they believe to be behind both stabbings — a 27-year-old Queens man with a criminal history — is now in custody and is awaiting charges.

The suspect's name or any charges had not been released publicly as of Thursday afternoon.

At about 5:50 a.m., a 42-year-old man was riding a downtown-bound D train as it approached the Columbus Circle station, according to officials.

Suddenly, a stranger walked up to him from behind and stabbed him once in the right shoulder, police said.

The stabber fled into an uptown 2 train while the injured man somehow made his way to Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn in stable condition where he was treated for minor injuries.

About an hour and a half later, the same person stabbed a 19-year-old in the arm onboard a 2 train in the Bronx near East 174th Street, chief of transit Michael Kemper said at a Thursday news conference.

On Thursday at about 7:30 a.m., officers arrested the man inside a Bronx subway station, Kemper confirmed, adding that video evidence helped officers link the two stabbings.

"He's wearing the same clothing," Kemper said, adding that "he was in possession of two knives when these officers chased him and apprehended him."

Kemper said that the unnamed man in custody has multiple prior arrests, including five in the last year, ranging from assault to sex crimes.

"He's well known to us," Kemper said.
