Man Stabbed While Sleeping On Downtown 2 Train, DA Says

A suspect has been charged with attempted murder.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A New Yorker has been indicted for repeatedly stabbing a man while he was sleeping on a downtown 2 train pulling into 96th Street, District Attorney Alvin Bragg said on Monday.

According to the district attorney, Angel Alvarado, 54, was on a downtown 2 train at 4:25 a.m. on Jan. 28 when he approached a sleeping man, 48, and started stabbing him.

Then, Alvarado dragged the victim through the door between cars, Bragg said. When the train stopped at the West 96th Street station, a passenger onboard notified the MTA conductor and police eventually arrested Alvarado on the platform, Bragg said.

“As alleged, this was a brutal attack against a completely defenseless and helpless victim, and I hope he recovers quickly from his injuries,” Bragg said.

Alvarado is charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with one count of attempted murder in the second degree, one count of attempted assault in the first degree, one count of assault in the second degree, and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

“I know how scary this type of random violence against strangers is, and I want the public to know that we are going to continue to prosecute these cases and keep transit riders safe," Bragg said.
