Mattress Fire Breaks Out In UWS Residential Building: FDNY
Firefighters battled flames for around 30 minutes early Wednesday morning on the Upper West Side, FDNY said.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A mattress fire broke out early Wednesday morning at an Upper West Side building.
The flames ignited around 12:19 a.m. on the third floor of 294 Riverside Dr., between West 101st and 102nd streets, FDNY said.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control at the five-story building around 30 minutes later, FDNY said.

There were no injuries, FDNY added.
Each year, there are an estimated 20,800 fires attributed to mattress or bedding flames, according to the United States Fire Administration. These fires cause 2,220 injuries, 380 deaths, and $104 million in damages, USFA added.

Cigarettes are the leading form of ignition for mattress or bedding fires, according to the United States Fire Administration.
In 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission enforced a new standard that required mattresses to resist ignition from cigarettes and other small flames.
FDNY did not specify how the Upper West Side fire Wednesday morning ignited.
