New Coffee Shop To Open On Upper West Side Corner

Moka & Co., a Yemeni coffee shop, will soon open the doors to their new UWS spot, where they'll sell much more than standard coffee.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A national coffee chain with a popular location in Astoria is about to open its doors on the Upper West Side.

Moka & Co., a Yemeni coffee shop, will start selling coffee—as well as tea and other treats—at 2481 Broadway, situated between West 92nd and 93rd streets, on Friday.

A representative from Moka announced on social media that they plan to host a soft opening on Friday, June 14, inviting Upper West Siders to experience a preview of their variety of traditional and cultural coffee blends.

“Authentic Yemeni Coffee is coming to Manhattan… Join us with two new Moka & Co. locations coming to you soon and experience coffee heritage, delicious beverages and the Yemeni inspired aesthetics of a modern coffee house,” a post on the shop's Instagram page reads.

The coffee shop, which has locations in both New York and Michigan, offers a unique style of coffees, teas, specialty drinks and pastries.

The menu features Maleki, a coffee drink made with coffee husks, cream, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom and honey, and "Shai Yemeni," a black tea with cloves and cardamom.

Alongside their selection of coffee and tea, the menu at Moka & Co. boasts a variety of Middle Eastern and American pastries.

Offerings include basbousa, an Egyptian semolina cake infused with yogurt; sabaya, a rich multilayered honey cake; as well as milk cake, a Middle Eastern twist on tres leches cake.

Additionally, patrons can indulge in muffins, croissants and cheesecakes. Notably, all of Moka & Co.'s coffee beans are sourced organically from local farmers and cooperatives in Yemen.

“By embracing fair trade and organic practices, we not only support the Yemeni farmers with fair prices but also advocate for the environment,” the website states. "Each coffee bean is carefully handpicked and sun-dried atop stone rooftops, a method passed down through generations, ensuring that every cup you pour is imbued with history and purity."

Moka & Co. will be occupying the storefront formerly held by the longstanding Greek establishment, Telio, which has since relocated to a space on W. 85th and Columbus Avenue.
