New ‘High End’ UWS Chinese Restaurant Coming To Ex-La Mirabelle Space

Expect peking duck and a variety of Sichuan dishes in an "elegant" gold and teal dining room. Here's what to know:

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY - The former space of longtime Upper West Side French restaurant La Mirabelle will be serving up Chinese dishes in the near future, according to the new eatery's owner.

Dubbed “Abes,” the “high end” restaurant will be taking up shop at 102 West 86th St. near Columbus Avenue, owner Leon Liu said during Community Board 7’s Business & Consumer Issues Committee meeting on Wednesday.

Drawing inspiration from the classification of birds, Abes will feature peking duck and Sichuan dishes in an “elegant” and “very modern” interior of teals and golds.

“We’d like to bring some good Chinese food to the area,” Liu said. “Definitely peking duck and a lot of good Sichuan dishes. That’s something that a lot of Americans do appreciate.”

Liu, a native New Yorker himself and restaurant manager with about a decade of experience in Manhattan, said he is deeply familiar with American-Chinese flavors and aims to bring the beloved pairing to the Upper West Side.

Abes is slated to open in three to four months, Liu said before the community board approved the eatery's liquor license.

A liquor license was approved last year for a Shanghai-inspired restaurant at the same space, though that project was later abandoned.

Abes is expected to seat up to 52 customers and will close at 11 p.m. daily. Upper West Side-dwellers will also be able to order delivery from the eatery through third party apps like Uber Eats.
