The stations will close as part of the MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative to rehabilitate stations with aesthetic improvements and install new technology such as countdown clocks and LED illuminated handrails. One station, located at West 163rd Street in Washington Heights, already closed for renovations.
Transit advocates have criticized the MTA's renovation plans because they do not include upgrades for accessibility at any of the targeted stations.
