Rapist Attacked Woman In Her UWS Apartment Building, DA Says

The man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for rape in the first degree.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A man has been convicted of following an Upper West Side woman into her apartment building at night and raping her, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said.

Bragg, who announced the conviction on Friday, said that the defendant, 31-year-old Jamel McIver, was sentenced to 20 years in state prison and 15 years of post-release supervision.

According to Bragg, on March 4, 2023, a 21-year-old woman was returning home after a night out at 1:20 a.m. when McIver followed the woman into the elevator of her apartment building, near West 64th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

Then, McIver threatened the woman and pulled her into a stairwell where he sexually assaulted and raped her, Bragg said.

Then, McIver pulled the woman down multiple staircases and outside the building, where he threatened her and then let her go, Bragg said.

“Jamel McIver viciously threatened and raped a woman in the building she called home, causing indescribable fear and pain that she and her loved ones still endure today,” Bragg said. “I thank this brave survivor for coming forward and sincerely hope the resolution of this case can offer her a sense of justice."

According to Bragg, McIver pleaded guilty in a New York State Supreme Court to one count of rape in the first degree on Oct. 10.
