Rice Bowl Eatery From Award Winning Chef Opens On Upper West Side
JJ Johnson, a James Beard award-winning chef and TV personality, opened FIELDTRIP Wednesday on Broadway between 113th and 114th streets.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A new fast-casual rice bowl eatery from an award winning chef opened on the Upper West Side on Wednesday.
FIELDTRIP, overseen by James Beard award-winning chef JJ Johnson, opened its third location at 2913 Broadway, between West 113th and 114th streets.
“FIELDTRIP is a community centered fast-casual serving better-for-you food at an affordable price point,” Johnson said in a news release. “I can’t wait for Upper West Siders to experience the different cultures of rice from around the world, whether you want to take a trip to the Low Country or Caribbean, we have flavors, ingredients and techniques that will transport you there.”

The 950-square-foot storefront pays homage to vintage inspired material commonly found in Black-owned diners, and features 14 indoor seats and 12 outdoor seats, according to the restaurant.

- Crispy Fish Bowl with cornmeal crusted market fish, cilantro lime rice, wok veggies, tartar sauce, and pickled red onions.
- Seafood Gumbo with shrimp, scallops, chicken duck sausage, brown rice, okra, scallions, and Fresno chilis.
- Crab Pockets with Blue Crab, garlic herbed cream cheese, and sweet and sour sauce.
- Sweet Plantains with fire roasted red peppers and hot honey.
FIELDTRIP's brand motto is "Rice is Culture," and was born out of Johnson's belief that "rice is a universal ingredient that connects us all and can be found at the center of the table in every community."
The first FIELDTRIP opened in Harlem in 2019.
