"I'm stable. I should be fine," the victim, Boris Shapiro, told the network from his hospital bed. "[The gunman] got fired six months or a year ago."
Shapiro is reportedly the owner of Lincoln Business Machines, an IT support and computer repair service shop at 111 West 68th Street.
The shooter showed up at the business with a gun on Thursday morning, Shapiro said, but left without incident.
Shapiro then followed the gunman along Columbus Avenue.
“I wanted to call police. He came in [the shop] with a gun and I was afraid he would come back and trap us, so I called 911. And that’s when he saw me and ran after me,” he said.
Shapiro was shot in the leg and the shoulder by the as yet unidentified male shooter, according to officials. Emergency responders transported him to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital in stable condition.
As of Friday morning, police could not confirm any information about the shooter, what led to the shooting, or if the victim and his attacker knew one another.
Subway Evacuated
An NYPD spokesperson said the suspect fled into the C train station at 72nd Street and Central Park West, resulting in delays to A/C/B/D trains in both directions as police conducted a search.
That included the evacuation of a C train at about 10:15 a.m. near 72nd Street, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed. Approximately 400 riders were safely evacuated, with no injuries, the agency said.
A New York Times reporter was on that C train at the time of the incident, and an account of their experience, including video, is here.
'He Got Away'
The search yielded no suspect, however.
"He got away," cops said on Thursday. "How he exited [the subway] or how he got away from us is unclear."
Police were unable to confirm reports that the suspect escaped after running into a subway tunnel, and normal service had resumed as of Thursday afternoon, officials said.
According to ABC7, the suspect was reportedly wearing a white hat, green jacket/blue hoodie, and was holding a black firearm in his hand.
