Target To Open Columbus Circle Store In 2019
The popular retailer secured a lease with AvalonBay Communities, which is building a 416-foot development on Broadway and West 61st Street.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Retail giant Target will continue to expand its operations in New York City by opening a small-format store near Columbus Circle in 2019, the company announced.
The new store will be located on West 61st Street and Broadway in a 34,000-square-foot space, Target announced. The store's inventory will be tailored to meet the needs of local residents, area commuters and tourists.
"We’re thrilled to continue growing our footprint throughout New York City with small-format stores that provide local families, commuters and visitors with a convenient, one-stop shopping experience. Located in a premier shopping hub of Manhattan, this store will serve Midtown West and Upper West Side guests, as well as meet the on-the-go needs of Central Park visitors and Columbus Circle shoppers," Mark Schindele, senior vice president of properties at Target, said in a statement.

Target secured its lease for the new location with real estate firm AvalonBay Communities. An executive at the firm said AvalonBay is "thrilled" that the store will occupy retail space in its development at 1865 Broadway. The development is expected to rise 416 feet tall and contain 172 apartment units, according to plans filed with the city Department of Buildings.
Target is likely to occupy the development's entire retail component.

"Our building offered Target unique access to day-trippers, tourists and one of the most affluent demographics in the country. In addition, the building is just one block from The Shops at Columbus Circle, one of the highest performing malls in the country," Martin Piazzola senior vice president at AvalonBay Communities, said in a statement.
The new Target store will be the retailer's 28th store planned for New York City. A staff of 160 people will work at the Columbus Circle location. The new store will offer shoppers the opportunity to order ahead of time with in-store pickup, Target officials said.
