Thunderstorms Threaten Weekend In NYC: See Latest Forecast, Timeline

New York City will cycle through deluges and dry weather this weekend, forecasters say, throwing all outdoor plans into limbo.

NEW YORK CITY — A storm bringing rounds of humid showers and bursts of thunder is set to put a damper on plans this weekend in New York City, forecasters said.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm could move into the New York City area as early as 5 p.m. Friday, and cycle through showers and thunder with temperatures in the high 70s until Sunday, when the storm will clear out during the day.

The rain is predicted to hold off on Sunday until late afternoon, forecasters said.

This would be excellent timing for the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, which will make its annual journey up Fifth Avenue starting at 11 a.m. Sunday. For Saturday, Patch recommends air-conditioned indoor plans, like visiting the Frick's new cafe or the Met's new wing.

AccuWeather gives Saturday an 88 percent chance of rain, and a 53 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day, while the National Weather Service gives Saturday a 60 percent chance of rain and a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms.

However, the forecast won't stay clear for long, forecasters say. A new, moisture-packed storm will move toward New York on Sunday evening and drop the bulk of its rain on Tuesday in New York City, before giving way to warmer weather.

"There are signs that point to the same high pressure producing record heat in the Northwest will arrive in the East by the end of next week," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill said.

"This would allow the temperature pattern to flip-flop with much above average temperatures returning to the region."
