Upper West Side Fire Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Hurt, FDNY Says

The fire broke out around 10:15 Monday morning in a nine-story building on West 87th Street.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — One person died and two people were inured Monday morning after a fire broke out in an Upper West Side apartment building, an FDNY spokeswoman said.

The blaze broke out around 10:15 a.m. on the third floor of a nine-story building on West 87th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, an FDNY spokeswoman said. Firefigthers brought the fire under control shortly before 11 a.m., fire officials said.

One person was declared dead at the scene of the fire and two others were hospitalized in serious and minor condition, an FDNY spokeswoman said. The person who died was a 71-year-old man who has not been identified, police said. The city medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the man's exact cause of death, police said.
