Upper West Side Library To Close Until December

The St. Agnes Library near West 81st Street and Amsterdam will temporarily close on Monday for building improvement work.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Side library branch will close next week and stay closed for up to four months.

The St. Agnes Library, at 444 Amsterdam Ave. (between West 81st and 82nd streets), will close Monday until an unspecified date in December.

The closure is to facilitate "necessary building improvements," said the New York Public Library.

Specifically, the work will be to replace the floors and make other repairs throughout the building.

The book drop off service at the library branch will close down Saturday night.

Other New York Public Libraries Upper West Siders can go to during the closure are the Riverside Library at 127 Amsterdam Ave. and the Bloomingdale Library at 150 W. 100th St.

Turning back some chapters, a parish library was created at the St. Agnes Chapel on West 91st Street in 1893.

In 1906, the branch moved to its present location, and was built with funds given to the city by Andrew Carnegie.
