Purse Stuffed With $10K Found In UWS Subway Station, Report Says

An Upper West Side resident stumbled upon $10,000 in cash left inside a Chanel purse at the West 66th and Broadway subway station.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Sider is being hailed as a hero after returning thousands of dollars misplaced in a neighborhood subway station, according to reports.

Richard Taverna, a West 107th Street resident, picked up a discarded Chanel purse on a bench of the West 66th Street and Broadway subway station Thursday morning and put it inside his gym bag, the West Side Rag first reported. After returning home from the YMCA, he looked inside and discovered an envelope holding $10,000 in cash, according to the report.

The only identifying marking on the purse was a note written in Russian, Taverna tod the West Side Rag. The next morning, Taverna took the find straight to the 20th Precinct.

Commanding officer Capt. Timothy Malin told the West Side Rag that Taverna's actions are a "Christmas mircale," but the Upper West Sider insisted "I think most people would’ve returned it."

The money was reported missing by a woman traveling to Russia, and the police will return her cash when she arrives back in the United States, the West Side Rag reported.
