UWS Building Near Top In Barking Dog Complaints In NYC: Report
The data team at Localize.city studied which New York City addresses received the most dog bark complaints in a 12-month period.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — One Upper West Side condominium was near the top in a ranking of the New York City buildings with the most dog-related noise complaints in a 12-month span, according to a new report from Localize.city.
The 12-story building at 105 W. 72nd St., located between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, racked up the second most dog-related noise complaints in the city from July 31, 2017, to July 30, 2018, Localize.city first reported. Data scientists at Localize created an algorithm that analyzed the recency and frequency of noise complaints to match complaints to buildings.
The culprit: A doggy day care center.

The condominium building houses SPOT Canine Club on its ground floor, which was the source of neighbors' frustrations, Localize reported. The business was especially noisy due to a renovation project that forced SPOT Canine Club to keep more pups in its outdoor courtyard.
The business apologized to its neighbors in a letter first published by neighborhood blog The West Side Rag.

"The renovations of our playrooms are complete, and we do not expect there to be any further noise disturbances going forward," the letter read. "After being in the neighborhood for over seven years, this is the first time we’ve heard these types of complaints."
The canine club also emphasized in its letter that its staff are trained not to yell at dogs and that the renovation project lasted only 12 days.
Over the past five years, New Yorkers have filed 7,200 dog-related noise complaints per year, according to the report. The amount of noise complaints fluctuates on a month-by-month basis, with July and August seeing the least amount of complaints and March and September seeing the greatest amount of complaints.
In total, there were 431 buildings in New York City where dog barking resulted in verifiable complaints from July 31, 2017, to July 30, 2018, Localize reported. The buildings with the most complaints were located in Harlem, the Upper West Side, Williamsburg, Floral Park and the Seaside section of the Rockaways.
