UWS Manhole Fires Knock Out Power To 70 Apartments: Reports

The FDNY extinguished four manhole fires Wednesday night on the Upper West Side.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Seventy Upper West Side apartments lost power Wednesday night when four manhole fires broke out and damaged underground utilities, according to reports.

The fires broke out on West 104th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues, ABC7 first reported. Firefighters arrived on the scene around 7:30 p.m. and had the fires under control within 30 minutes, according to the report.

Even though the fires were put out relatively quickly, three Con Edison feeders were damaged and had to be repaired, a spokesperson for the utility company told ABC 7. While Con Ed crews were working to repair the damage, more than 70 apartments were left without power, according to the report.
