UWS Metro Theater Is Officially Becoming A Multi-Screen Theater

The owners of the incoming Metro Cinema confirmed to the UWS community board on Wednesday night that the Metro Theater would rise again.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — "God, please let this happen" one Upper West Sider said during a community board meeting Wednesday night where the new owners of the Metro Cinema laid out and confirmed their plans for the rebirth of the long-shuttered Metro Theater.

Empty since 2006, the Metro Theater on Broadway between West 99th and 100th Street has been a long-time point of frustration in the neighborhood.

The new owners of the forthcoming movie theater set up are Mikey Trafton and Tim League, the latter of whom is the founder of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain.

League was involved with Metro Theater previously in 2013, when he was close to inking a deal for the space before it fell through.

"We are very excited about attempt number two at the Metro Theater," League said during Wednesday's meeting.

League went on to explain that the new theater would show new blockbusters along with classic films, as well as have an option to rent out screens for video games or karaoke.

There will also be a restaurant within the theater with a wine list and a small bar.

Mark Levine, who has been an active voice in finding a tenant for the long shuttered Metro Theater, told Patch he was thrilled about the incoming theater.

"I am thrilled the Metro Theater is officially getting the second act it deserves as a multi-screen movie dinner theater," Levine told Patch. "Reviving this Art Deco gem will breathe new life into the neighborhood and attract moviegoers from across the city to the Upper West Side."

"I can not wait to walk down the red carpet with everyone who helped us make this possible when the Metro Theater finally re-lifts its curtains in the near future!" he added.

There is no official expected opening date yet, but the hours are expected to be from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. The theater's capacity will be around 175 people.
