Jiu-Jitsu Icon Alexandre “Soca” de Freitas Honored with Coral Belt Promotion

Alexandre "Soca" de Freitas, revered as a Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu (BJJ) legend, has achieved the highly esteemed Coral Belt

Long Island's own Alexandre “Soca” de Freitas, revered as a Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu (BJJ) legend, has achieved the highly esteemed Coral Belt—one of the highest honors in the art, awarded only after an extraordinary 31 years as a black belt, exemplifying unparalleled dedication, mastery, and influence in the sport.

Soca, founder of Soca BJJ, began his journey on the mats at age 15, inspired by his brother’s training at the Carlos Gracie Jr. Academy. Under the tutelage of Jean Jacques Machado, he forged the technical foundation for a storied career that has spanned decades.

Over the years, Soca has amassed a resume that reads like a who’s who of grappling greatness: strong and victor of high‑profile events including ADCC World Champion, Abu Dhabi World Pro Legends (2016, 2017), earning “Most Technical Competitor” and “Best Match” honors.

His competitive spirit remains undimmed. As recently as August 2023, Soca expressed his drive to become a 10‑time World Master Champion, continuing to compete with passion despite more than 35 years of dedication and the challenges of age and injury.

A lifelong competitor and coach, Soca established four Soca BJJ academies—in Wantagh, Glen Cove (NY), Lemon Grove (CA) and San Diego (CA)—since launching the flagship school in 2005. His teaching philosophy emphasizes inclusivity, lifelong learning, and character development through martial arts. He has personally nurtured 121 black belt students, with his wife Samantha also a ten‑time World Master Champion, and their children already making their mark in youth championships.

The Coral Belt promotion ceremony, held at SocaBJJ in Wantagh, was presided over by two iconic figures of BJJ: Jean Jacques Machado and Renzo Gracie, and brought together the first generation of the legendary Gracie Barra team—trailblazers of modern competitive Jiu‑Jitsu.

In his reflection, Soca measured the milestone not merely by the belt itself but by the journey:

“This belt represents more than decades of training... It’s about the journey, the champions we’ve formed, and the generations we’ve inspired.”

More than a symbol of rank, the Coral Belt stands as a testament to Soca’s enduring legacy of perseverance, leadership, and impact on grapplers, coaches, and communities around the world.
