Update: Woman Fatally Struck by Train in Wantagh

MTA Police investigating incident as possible suicide.

A woman was fatally struck by a train late Friday morning at the .

The 45-year old woman was standing on the westbound tracks at the western edge of the station when the collision occurred just before 11:30 a.m. MTA police set up a crime scene investigation following the incident.

LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto said the train that struck the woman was a westbound express from Babylon to Freeport. The accident caused delays of 20 to 30 minutes in both directions, Zambuto said. While the investigation took place the LIRR operated trains in both directions through the Wantagh area on the available eastbound track.

Zambuto said MTA police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide. The identity of the woman was not released.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article stated that it was a man that had been struck by the train but it has now been confirmed by MTA officials that it was a 45-year old woman who was fatally struck  on the tracks.
