Update: Man Critical After Hannington Avenue Fire

One man went into cardiac arrest, police said.

Updated: Aug. 4, 6:55 p.m. And 8:31 p.m.

Two people were transported to the hospital due to a fire that started in a house on Hannington Avenue Saturday afternoon.

The Wantagh Fire Department was at scene and removed a female victim, 80, from the home.  A male victim, 80, was still inside attempting to put out the fire. Police and fire personnel gained entry through the front door and discovered the male victim, overcome by smoke, unconscious and not breathing. They removed him from the home and immediately performed CPR.

Police said that the 80-year-old man is in critical condition.

The blaze started around 2 p.m. in a bedroom, fire officials said.

Fire departments from North Bellmore, North Merrick and Levittown were on the scene.

The incident is still under investigation.
