Wantagh High School Student-Journalists Earn Bevy Of Awards

Wantagh Warrior high school journalists earned several awards during the Empire State Scholastic Press Association contest.

WANTAGH, NY — Wantagh high schoolers have been recognized with multiple awards for their excellent journalism. Under the direction of Peter Kravitz, Wantagh Warrior high school journalists garnered six individual awards during the yearly Empire State Scholastic Press Association contest, which is held at Syracuse University.

Senior Nicole Hooker took home the district's lone gold award in the sports news category for her article about last year's girls soccer team. Grace Anne McKenna won the district's lone silver award in the news story category and is the only Wantagh student-journalist to win an ESSPA award four consecutive years. She attends Boston College and has been published in the college's newspaper The Heights.

Honorable Mention awards were also earned by co-authors Kayla Doyle and Juliana Cupelli in the sports columnist category for an article on cheerleading and Julia Ferrara in the sports columnist category for an article on the school's dance team. Grace Anne also earned an honorable mention award in sports news, while Angelina Torre received an honorable mention in review writing.

Kravitz said the school newspaper has a trio of talented editors in chief in Jenna Miller, Juliet Watstein and Grace Kane. He looks forward to the writers' great work this school year.
