"I know many of these families are working-class people who have lost everything they owned," reads a GoFundMe for 74-78 Post Ave tenants.

INWOOD, NY — Thousands of dollars are being raised for the dozens of families left without a home after a fire struck 74-78 Post Avenue in Inwood on Nov. 24 for the second time this year.

The five-alarm blaze that broke out the night before Thanksgiving left 60 families without shelter for the foreseeable future, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser created for the tenants by neighbors.

Earlier in 2021, a major fire struck the building on Jan. 5, which also left dozens of families displaced at the time.

A day after the most recent blaze, Upper Manhattanites Hennessi Sanchez and Fred Sanchez organized a fundraiser for the families affected by the flames.

"As someone who was born and raised in this community, I know many of these families are working-class people who have lost everything they owned, including clothing, furniture, their life savings, etc, either in the fire or through asbestos water damage and also would’ve never in a million years imagined they would’ve become Homeless on Thanksgiving," reads the blurb for the fundraiser.

As of Wednesday evening, the GoFundMe has raised $13,983 of its $30,000 goal.

Over 270 people have donated to the cause, with one person giving a single donation of $2,000.

The fundraiser lists its goals as helping with repurchasing clothing and furniture to make the families feel like they're getting back to normal life.
