Once home to an auto repair shop, the location historically served as a burial ground for enslaved Africans. It was also significant to the indigenous Lenape people.
In 2023, Community Board 12, which represents Inwood and Washington Heights, endorsed the development of the shelter at the location, noting that both the burial ground and ceremonial site were destroyed during the urbanization of the area in 1903. Developer BRC has committed to creating a permanent memorial documenting the site’s historical significance.
