INWOOD, NY — Police officers shot a man early Monday after he fired at others gathered outside an Inwood nightclub, authorities said.

Around 4 a.m. Monday, police were patrolling 10th Avenue during the early-morning hours when the neighborhood's clubs close, NYPD Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes told reporters at a news conference Monday morning.

The officers spotted a group of men arguing outside the 11:11 Restaurant & Lounge on 10th Avenue near West 211th Street, but the club's security staff were doing "a great job" defusing the situation, Holmes said.

Moments later, however, the group walked south toward the corner of 211th Street, and officers heard a shot ring out. After taking cover, police drew their weapons and shot the alleged perpetrator.

Five people were shot altogether, with the four initial victims expected to survive, Holmes said. The suspected gunman was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was in surgery Monday morning.

Holmes did not say whether officers warned the gunman before firing at him. A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.

Monday's shooting came just days after a man was shot and killed outside the Opus Lounge, just a few blocks south on 10th Avenue.
