WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A man was hit in the head multiple times with a metal pipe and robbed after he fell asleep on a train in Washington Heights, a police spokesperson told Patch.

A 38-year-old man told police that he was sleeping on a northbound "A" train when a woman woke him up and told him that someone had grabbed his bag, police said.

As the man went to confront the person to get his bag back, a different person approached him with a sharp object and a fight broke out, police said.

The police did not specify if the two people were working together to rob the man, but the NY Post reported it was more than one person working together to rob the man.

By this point, all parties had left the train at the 181st Street A train platform, and the 38-year-old pushed one of the robbers onto the tracks, police said. During the scuffle, the man's phone also fell out of his pocket, police said.

Despite previously being at odds, the man whose bag was taken went to help the attempted robber get out from the train tracks, police said.

No good deed goes unpunished, though, and as he went to help, the third person grabbed the man's phone which had fallen out, police said.

Redirecting his attention to the robber that now had his phone, he tried to get it back, but was hit multiple times in the face with a metal pipe — causing lacerations, police said.

The two robbers then fled the scene.

The 38-year-old was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition, police said.

Police did not provide descriptions or photos of any suspects connected to the robbery and assault.

There have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.
