MANHATTAN, NY — Alvin Bragg will defeat Republican Thomas Kenniff by a significant amount to become Manhattan's next District Attorney, according to NY1 and The New York Times.

With 61 percent of precincts reporting as of 10:50 p.m., Bragg has 83.6 percent of the votes, according to NY1.

  • Bragg: 83.6 percent (154,181)
  • Kenniff: 16.4 percent (30,163)

Bragg will be the first person of color to hold the job and will take over the investigation into the Trump Organization, among other high-profile cases.

Kenniff took to Twitter a few minutes before 10:30 p.m. to congratulate Bragg on his victory.

"I'd like to congratulate Alvin Bragg on his historic victory tonight," Kenniff wrote. "While we may have competing visions on the role of DA, we are aligned in our commitment to public safety and a fair criminal justice system. I wish him nothing but success as he takes the reins of DA."

The two candidates ran to replace Cyrus Vance Jr., who announced earlier this year he was retiring at the end of his current term.

Bragg, a former state and federal prosecutor, got his name on the ballot by beating out seven other candidates in June's Democratic primary.

He went up against Kenniff, who was uncontested in June's Republican primary.

Kenniff is a criminal defense attorney and an Iraq War veteran.
