WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — A multi-car pileup on the George Washington Bridge forced several lane closures and left smashed up cars strewn about the span's upper level, according to officials and witness video.

The crash occurred around 2:45 and forced the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to close all New York-bound lanes on the bridge's upper level. Delays are expected to continue on the bridge as lanes reopen.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the Port Authority announced that the crash site had been cleared and that drivers should expect residual delays of greater than 60 minutes on the bridge.

One motorist on the bridge captured the aftermath of the crash and posted a video to social media. Drivers can be seen standing on the bridge assessing damage to their vehicles and several tractor-trailers were involved in the collision. At one point, the video-taker said "oh my god" as he passed by a Lexus that appeared to have been struck by a big rig.
