Wash Heights 181st Street 1 Station Reopens With New Elevators

After a year, the 1 train station at 181st Street is open again with new elevators. Here's what to know.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY – In some major transit news for Washington Heights, the 1 train station at St. Nicholas Avenue and 181st Street is open again after closing down for 12 months to repair the elevators.

The New York City subway Twitter account tweeted out the news somewhat unexpectedly at 11:51 p.m. on Tuesday.

The tweet says the new elevator systems are three months ahead of schedule, but the Metropolitan Transit Authority said the repairs would take until December 2021 when it first announced the closure.

The MTA replaced the elevators within the station and extended them directly into the northbound platform. The station's elevators were over 80 years old.

The 181st Street 1 station was built in 1906. It is also listed on the U.S. Register of Historic Places and reaches a depth of 122 feet below ground.

Upper Manhattanites were excited to get back such a vital train station in the neighborhood.

"YAY," one person responded with to the news on Twitter, while another person tweeted out "Let's Go!" in response.

The completion of the 181st Street elevators comes a year after the MTA finished installing new elevators at the nearby 191st Street 1 station.
