Wash Heights Garage To Possibly Be Turned Into 8-Story School: Permits
Permits were filed with the city at the end of last week to turn a three-story garage into an eight-story building at West 162nd Street.

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY — Permits were filed at the end of last week to expand a three-story parking garage in Washington Heights into an eight-story building.
The garage is located at 528 W. 162nd St., between Broadway and St. Nicholas avenues.
The proposed building would be 118-feet tall, with 52,383 square-feet designated for community space, and a 20-foot-long yard in the back, permits show.

The expansion would eliminate 126 parking spaces, though, according to permits.
The garage currently at the site is listed as "permanently closed" on Google.

There are not exact details on what the new building will be, but the WHIN Music Community Charter School has reportedly signed a $44 million construction loan for the Washington Heights site.
The location would make sense for the school as its current address is a short walk away at 517 W. 164th St.
WHIN is a music-based elementary chart school that also provides "rigorous academic instruction."
WHIN did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.
Since the project is an expansion and not a new building, there will most likely not be a demolition permit filed with the city for the site.
Patch will update this article when new information becomes available.
